چکیده

We present observations of H 2 fluorescence at wavelengths between 1000 and 1200Å from the bright reflection nebula IC 63. Observations were performed with the Berkeley spectrograph aboard the ORFEUS-II mission (Hurwitz et al. 1998). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detection of astrophysical H 2 fluorescent emission at these wavelengths (excluding planetary atmospheres). The shape of the spectrum is well described by the model of Sternberg (1989). The absolute intensity, however, is fainter than an extrapolation from observations at longer ultraviolet wavelengths (Witt et al. 1989) by a factor of ten. Of the mechanisms that might help reconcile these observations, optical depth effects in the fluorescing H 2 itself are the most promising (or at least the most difficult to rule out).

Gamma ray burst outflows may entrain small blobs or filaments of dense, highly ionized metal rich material. Such inhomogeneities, accelerated by the flow to Lorentz factors in the range 10-100, could have a significant coverage factor, and give rise to broad features, especially due to Fe K-edges, which influence the spectrum below the MeV range, leading to a progressively decreasing hardness r...

Neutrinos may offer a unique opportunity to explore the far Universe at high energy. The ANTARES collaboration aims at building a large undersea neutrino detector able to observe astrophysical sources (AGNs, X-ray binary systems, ...) and to study particle physics topics (neutrino oscillation, ...). After a description of the research opportunities of such a detector, a status report of the exp...

We use current cosmic microwave background data to constrain cosmological parameters. The results are presented as confidence regions in the (Ω–Ho) – plane for both open and flat geometries, and are based on a χ 2 minimization to the power spectrum. Although such an approach does not strictly apply to power spectrum estimates, the results should nonetheless be indicative. We find that purely op...
